Get or Give? A Thousand Elsewhere

Get or Give?

The sentiment that God see’s and hears everything is usually used in a negative "be careful what you do" light, as if God is Santa Clause.

But what about the flip side?

All of the "invisible" good works of humanity—the clean laundry, diaper changes, home cooked meals, vacuuming, help with homework, handmade cards, comforting hugs, thoughtful gestures, hosting, donating, listening, showing up to work everyday to provide for your family, mentoring, volunteering—God sees it all too.

I’m taking a break from social on my personal account for various reasons but here’s one: I think our social media feeds are filled with timelapse’s of folding laundry and DIY’s and cleaning and before and after’s and random acts of kindness because we are looking for validation from others that we did a good thing. I totally get it, it’s fun to share these things. It’s satisfying to show people the good we are doing that goes unseen. But God sees the good. God IS the good, He knows it when He sees it. Nobody else has to see it for it to bring glory to God.

To quote @legitsadierob at @passion268 after a demonstration that you cannot use the flashlight of an iPhone at the same time as selfie mode; "You cannot be trying to get the glory and give the glory. You are designed in such a way that you are called to be the light of the world" (you can watch the reference reel here).

So we need to ask ourselves - why doesn’t it feel like enough that He sees our tainted good? Why is being a light for Jesus—for Jesus’ sake—not enough?

Join me in checking in on our hearts to consider why we share the things we share with others. Am I trying to GET the glory or GIVE the glory? Because it can’t be both. --- So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved. 1 Corinthians 10:31-33 | ESV
