Proverbs 6
As a child it’s hard to believe that your father’s orders and your mother’s teaching can guide and form you into a wise and healthy adult. At that age it just feels like rules and restrictions.
But as adults, would we be where we are today without them? If you had an absentee father or a mother who just didn’t care, would you have any of the loving discipline that comes along with order and teaching? Discipline may happen, but not out of love. Not out of a bright hope for your future.
How much more are we made wise and mature through the commandments of our Lord, leading us, watching over us. Even when it feels like we don’t NEED guiding and protecting—we do. --- My son, keep your father’s commandment, and forsake not your mother’s teaching. Bind them on your heart always; tie them around your neck. When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you. For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life, to preserve you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.
