1 John 1 A Thousand Elsewhere

1 John 1

Today in the church we heard the gospel preached to us on 1 John 1:5-10 regarding fellowship with the God who is Light; the Light proclaimed and the Light received.

I wanted to share his practical breakdown on what we are called to do in fellowship with Christ to rid ourselves of darkness and walk anew in the light. The journey from darkness to light can be broken down into 4 digestible steps I’ve paired with some notes and the start of a prayer.

Conviction
- Believe...
“I am a sinner; I see my depravity.”
Confession
- ...of sins, bring your darkness into the light
"Oh God, I have ___________..."
Cleansing
- He is faithful to forgive
“Let your forgiveness flood every dark corner of my life.”
Commitment
- Walk in God's light; still sinners, but no longer dark
“Lord, help me to walk in Your light.”

This cycle isn’t a one-and-done experience, (last time I checked I haven’t stopped sinning since Christ came into my life), this is an as-needed confession and renewal. We as sinners, left to our own devices are quick to turn away, quick to serve ourselves—but God has given us His son, the Light of the world to pull us out of the destructive cycle of darkness of this fallen world and bring us into His marvellous light. Seriously, I don’t know where I’d be without that Light, praise God!

What about you, do you recognize this cycle in your own life? If you don’t, where can you improve? --- This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 1 John‬ ‭1:5-10‬ ‭| ESV‬‬
