Lagom A Thousand Elsewhere

Lagom

My husband stumbled on a word yesterday (we’re both word nerds) that so simply describes our lifestyle goals.

lagom
[lo-gawm ]
noun
the principle of living a balanced, moderately paced, low-fuss life.

With that sentiment fresh in my mind, the words of Proverbs 15:16 hit me this morning.
“Better is a little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble with it.”
Dan and I lead a pretty minimal life. We live in a 500sqft apartment, we try not to accumulate a lot of stuff, we go on donation sprees when we recognize our things are starting to pile up and we try to only buy necessities. It’s also why we love camping—backcountry or living out of our car for a time—we love living with a little.

Why?

Because in our experience, the more stuff we have, the less we look to our Father to satisfy.

The more things we accumulate, the less we look to Jesus for comfort.

The more items we have on our calendar, the less focused we are on our God-given purpose here.

What is the Devil dragging you away from God with? The safety of always being “busy”? The comfort of regular online shopping? The people-pleasing false fulfillment of constantly serving others (as opposed to serving out of thankfulness to God for our salvation)?

Whatever “it” is, identify it and admit it’s pulling you away from Christ. Only then can you repent, pray and then do the good hard work of cutting it out, to be set free through the love and blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ. --- A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is crushed. The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, but the mouths of fools feed on folly. All the days of the afflicted are evil, but the cheerful of heart has a continual feast. Better is a little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble with it. Better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a fattened ox and hatred with it. Proverbs‬ ‭15:13-17‬ ‭| ESV‬‬
